The 3-3-5 defensive scheme is one of the most used by top NCAA players online. With three defensive linemen, three linebackers, and five defensive backs it is very flexible to defend the run and pass. The 3-3-5 Stack formation has a bunch of solid blitz packages that we like to bring the heat with when opponents gets pass happy. In this NCAA 08 video breakdown we are going to take a look at one such blitz package and that’s the Fire Green.

The 3-3-5 Stack Fire Green has no safeties playing deep zone, meaning Cover 0 coverage. It sends a six man pass rush at the quarterback, making very hard for the offensive linemen to block. There are five defenders locked up in man coverage on the five eligible receivers. Because there is no safety help deep, we must be able to get instant pressure on quarterback or risk giving up the play. With a few pre-snap adjustments, we can get that instant pressure by getting A Gap heat from the MLB. Here is how.

First , we shift the linebackers to the right.

Next, we take control of the ROLB and move him head up over the LG. He should line up as close to line of scrimmage without going off sides.

We then want to take control of the MLB and stack him behind the ROLB.

The MLB’s blitz angle now shoots through the A Gap between the C and LG.

We like to take control of the defender covering the RB when the offense comes out in Ace sets. The reason for this is we want to see what the RB does once the ball is snapped. If he stays into pass block, we have choices to make. We can either blitz or drop back in deep zone coverage. If the HB goes out on pass route, we generally will go cover him, but we still have are other options available to us if we choose to use them.

Our last pre-snap adjustment we make is optional. For this video break down, we call bump-n-run coverage to slow down the receivers from getting out on their pass routes.

From the down view, here is better look at of how the Enhanced 3-3-5 Stack Fire Green setup looks like.

Once the ball is snapped, the C will block the NT.

The LG is guard is forced to decide on which linebacker to block. Does he block the ROLB or MLB?

In most cases, he will block the ROLB.

This allows the MLB to shoot right up the A Gap between the C and LG to get pressure on the QB.

This is just of many 3-3-5 blitz schemes we will be showcasing in the filmroom during the NCAA 08 season. One thing to keep in mind with this blitz, sometime the MLB may not always shoot the A Gap. If he doesn't, then pressure usually comes from CB3, who is blitzing the outside.
